When was the last time that you had your chimney cleaned? If you do not remember if you have ever had your chimney swept or if it has been a long time, you should call Chicagoland Air Duct to schedule a chimney cleaning and inspection. The Chicago area is known for its intense winters, which is the time you are most likely to turn on your fireplace, pellet stove, or your wood stove to heat up your home.

The Importance of a Clean Chimney

Every time that you burn wood or pellets in your fireplaces or stoves, the substance creosote will be created. Over time, the creosote will build up inside of your chimney. If the creosote is not cleaned regularly, it can act as a type of fuel and start a fire within the chimney itself.

Understanding Chimney Inspection Regulations

The National Fire Protection Association has regulations involving chimneys. Part of the regulations include the recommendations for having your chimney cleaned annually for both wood and bio-fuel pellet stoves. If you have an older chimney that is either mason built or factory built, the recommendation is having your chimney cleaned with there is an eighth of an inch of a soot level. Look at the manufacturer’s warranty for your wood stove or chimney. Many of the manufacturers will not keep a warranty valid on their products if they have not been serviced according to regulation. Most of the manufacturers will have their own set of regulations that they will ask for you to follow to keep your stove under warranty, but they are usually the same as, or close to what the National Fire Protection Association recommends.

The National Fire Protection Association states that all chimneys and fireplaces should have an inspection annually to ensure that it is in proper working order.

The Inspection

The two most common types of inspections that our technicians will do are the annual inspection and a higher level inspection. The basic annual inspection involves a visual inspection of the fireplace, chimney, or stove as well as the flue. In the higher level inspection, our technicians will use a camera to look at the interior of the chimney to evaluate for potential damage and buildup. The higher level inspection is usually used for home buyers, sellers, or realtors and is often required by law before a home can be sold.
